Writers' Guidelines
For Both Paid and Unpaid Contributions

Our mission is to provide Holliston residents and businesses information that is useful and thoughtful in an upbeat, positive way, and to share in fun and conversation. We want this to be an online community where people can share events, activities, and news, and get to know their neighbors wherever they might live in the town.
General information for our writers
News articles for the Internet must be succinct with short sentences, short paragraphs, and should generally use the active, not passive, voice. Readers spend only three to five seconds deciding whether to read an article online. Writers must keep this is mind. We will select articles accordingly. We hope to do minimal editing.
Columns and artwork
We encourage local writers to provide occasional or regular columns on their particular areas of expertise or interest.
Budding artists may share their talents in photography, poetry, fictions or other arts as well. We want to encourage young adults and children to contribute.
Organizations are asked to send press releases and issues of public interest to us, electronically, and we will publish them.
HNN will accept letters to the editors and Op-Ed pieces.
At this point, writers are operating as volunteers and thanks be to all! This is a new business. Eventually, our goal is to have a small cadre of freelance writers that will be compensated.
Pitching an article or column, fiction or non-fiction
Do you have expertise to share or an idea for a column? Please contact us (preferably electronically) with ideas for articles or regular columns. These might be fiction or non-fiction, poems, photographs, etc. Please include an example and email to info@hollistonnetnews.com. Please put “pitch” in the subject line.

Rights
The writer permits us first-time North American publishing rights, and then all rights revert to the writer. The complete works of any issue, as a whole, remain under the copyright of HNN.
Each edition of the News will be archived, which means that subscribers will have repeated opportunities to read something you contribute. If you do not want an article archived beyond the week in which it was first published, just let us know. If HNN paid a freelancer to write a news story as opposed to a feature, we would hope to maintain that story in the archives for at least 60 days but are happy to negotiate.
